Traveling with kids: what works for us

Before I had children, I traveled light and planned very little. Traveling as a mom of two is different. There is a stroller in the trunk, snacks in every bag and a slower pace. Over the years I have found a few habits that make our family trips easier and more enjoyable.

Choose the hotel carefully

With small children you spend more time at the hotel than you expect, during naps, early bedtimes and rainy afternoons. I look for a room with a separate sleeping area, a pool or garden where the kids can play, and staff who are used to families. A good breakfast at the hotel also makes mornings much easier. These are the same details I bring forward when I work on luxury hotel social media, because families notice them first.

Plan less each day

One outing a day is usually enough, such as a morning at the beach, a long lunch or a walk at sunset. A light schedule leaves time for unplanned moments, and with tired kids it is easier to add an activity than to cancel one.

Pack for comfort

I bring a light stroller that folds with one hand, a familiar blanket or toy for bedtime, layers for changing weather and a small bag that stays with me at all times. Most other things can be bought at the destination. That practical eye for what really helps a mom on the go is also what I bring to social media for motherhood brands.

Keep some time for yourself

A coffee on the balcony before everyone wakes up, a book by the pool during nap time or a quiet dinner after the kids are asleep. These short breaks make the trip feel like a holiday for me as well.

Traveling with children takes more planning, but it gives us time together and new experiences we all remember.
